PRACTICAL WATERING

THE VEGETABLE GARDENSPRACTICAL WATERING

Since Auroville is in an area of water stress we farm using as little water as possible.  Drip irrigation enables us to put water where it is needed close to the plant and this also limits evaporation.  We use four irrigation lines on each bed and our irrigation is timed to use the least amount of water possible that is needed to grow the plants.

In the picture our farm helpers are watering some plants that they have just planted.  Transplanting is rather a shock for the plant and giving them water at this time helps them to start growing well in the new place.  By using a watering can rather than a hose ensures that no more water is given than needed.  When you have to carry all the water to the plants it is very unlikely that over watering will occur!
