Thursday September 8th sunny and warm

With 14 people:

  1. We finished off the beds in the cashew orchard. We planted chicken spinach as a first step in creating a patch of chicken spinach in a shady area of the bed.  We planted wild and domestic varieties of brinjal together – the first step in developing a new variety of brinjal with the toughness of wild brinjal and the taste of the domestic variety.  We planted some tapioca cuttings and some rosella seeds.  Both plants need little water and will eventually create a self generating patch of plants that will provide ongoing harvests.  This is part of our ‘future food’ project looking at growing and developing plants that don’t need much water or human energy to grow.
  2. We cleared up the glyricidea in the guava patch and mulched all the guava trees with the glyricidea leaves. We also started to cut down some rather large trees in one corner that were shading the area too much.
  3. We gave extra water to lettuce and other seedlings that we have planted in the last few days.
